What makes you wonder?

Our first short story competition of the year is here! January’s theme is wonder, defined as “a feeling of surprise mingled with admiration, caused by something beautiful, unexpected, unfamiliar, or inexplicable.” In a time where good news can seem hard to come by, stories can remind us that the world still has some things worth our wonder.

Entries must be in English and 5,000 words or less, and can be preexisting or previously published work as long as the work is original and fits the competition theme. No entry fee, entry can be already written—what are you waiting for?

All we ask is for a few explanatory sentences at the beginning or end of your work to clarify the link to the competition theme. This also helps us distinguish entries from works uploaded for the workshopping trial.

Two winners will be selected by a guest author. One winner will be chosen by reader engagement, so make sure to share your entry with any community you'd like! Winners receive a feature at the top of and feedback from authors, editors, and/or publishers we work with, as well as social media shoutouts, blog posts, and features.

Midnight of January 31st.
